Review: Gray Gets The Party Started With 'In My Head' Featuring Swings [AUDIO]

One good way to tell if a dance track stands above the rest is to imagine rolling up to a party where the song is blaring over the speakers.

If the song would make you want to enter the party, it's probably something worth investigating further.

The song "In My Head" off of South Korean rapper Gray's debut EP "Call Me Gray," released on Friday, definitely passes that test.

Like Us on Facebook :

And while all four songs off of "Call Me Gray," the first album on chart-topper Jay Park's new record label AOMG, are solid dance tracks, there is a little something extra about "In My Head" that causes it to stand out.

Mostly, that little extra something comes from the beat.

The four on the floor rhythmic pattern is certainly nothing that isn't heard in 95 percent of dance music. But Gray manages to strip it down to the bare essentials.

In the process, he finds a unique sound within the rhythmic minimalism.

And not all rappers sound great over a four on the floor dance groove. Sure Kanye West or Blu can slay a dance groove as easily as they can flow over the standard boom-bip of a typical hip-hop beat. But most hip-hop artists aren't that versatile

Both Gray and guest artist Swings sound right at home with this dance floor rhythm as they dig in with a flow that makes you want to nod your head as you move your hips.

The Daft Punk-inflected vocoder sounds in the hook of "In My Head" drive the track into funkier territory than the rest of "Call Me Gray."

If there is one area this debut artist could improve the most, it would be ditching the Autotune heard on the rest of the EP in favor of raw production techniques that made rap surpass rock as the international artistic currency of youth.

Yet this easily could be chalked-up to first album jitters. Overall, Gray is clearly an artist with a voice and a vision.

It is impossible to predict where the future of South Korean hip-hop (often given the unfortunately spelled moniker of K-rap) is heading. But with artists like Swings and Gray at the helm, it certainly could be a very interesting ride.

Dress Up Like Your Favorite Male K-pop Star: G-Dragon, Psy, Exo

I can guarantee that everyone will be dressing like the world famous Psy for this coming Halloween. Dressing up as Psy this Oct. 31 will be an affordable one since all you really need is a pair of dark shades, gel, and a cheesy colored suit that you can pick up at your local thrift store.

If you love G-Dragon and plan on dressing like him for the upcoming holiday, then lucky for you that the options are limitless. Here are a few ideas:

Like Us on Facebook :

If you're lucky enough to have 11 other guy friends who love EXO as much as you do then dress up like EXO for Halloween. Do your hair nice, wear skinny jeans, and order shirts with wolves on them and any time someone asks you who you are, get into the "Wolf" formation and any K-pop fan will understand immediately.

If you want to be Jay Park for Halloween get a washable black marker and draw tattoos all over you. Make sure you do it enough that your mom screams and passes out by the time out come downstairs. Don't worry about buying an outfit. Grab your fitted hat, a pair of dark jeans, and go topless. If your abs aren't up to par there are videos on YouTube that show you how to trick people into thinking you have abs with make-up.

And lastly, if you are a boy and you want to look like your favorite pretty male idol i.e., Hyun Joong, JaeJoong, or Taemin, I'm sorry to say but it's too late for you to get the kind of surgery that will make you look like those beautiful men.

Music Video Review: GRAY Feat. Jay Park "Dangerous"

On the 25th of October, GRAY, music producer and artist recently dropped the music video for his new track Dangerous. The music video features artist Jay Park and Korea's Next Top Model Cycle 4 Contestant Jung Ha Eun.

The music video is the debut of GRAY as an artist and although the song may have its moments, the video overall plays between the border of sloppy and amateur.

Like Us on Facebook :

The video features some big names, understandably so. Though GRAY has worked with other artists in the past as a producer, he isn't exactly a household name just yet. On that note, he chose to combine big names with hot babes, the formula of what he supposes will stamp him in the music industry.

It tries a little too hard. There are many shots in the music video that doesn't at all meet the bar set high by the Kpop artists. Although it may be said that this isn't a Kpop video in the least, that still wouldn't make up for the lackluster video shots and the hot girl artbitrarily placed into every scenario possible because apparently every RnB music video should be accessorized with one.

And it isn't like he didn't have music videos to take note from that may echo that style that he was going for. Outside of Kpop, there are music videos like DEV's Bass Down Low, that doesn't tell much of a story apart from the typical underground party, but still features shots that can be feasted on by the viewers; slow motion chaos, crisp contrasts, etc. Within the Korean music industry, Beatles by GI was a color pop of sound and choreography. And there is also Jay Park's I like 2 Party.

Overall, I'd say with a little more tightening up, this video could have done well with the elements that it had. As it is, it's pretty forgettable and generic. 4 out of 10 overall.

The Sex Factor: Trouble Maker Turns Up The Heat To Join K-Pop's Sexiest Comebacks Of 2013

Hyunseung and HyunA definitely have chemistry.

Hyunseung and HyunA definitely have chemistry.

With HyunA sporting morning after looks in the newest teaser photos and hints of sexy new choreography, Cube Entertainment's naughty duo is set to return to the K-Pop scene. In an industry filled with pastel tinted video treatments and performers who can turn on their full aegyo at the drop of a hat, it is refreshing to see artists who dare to sex things up. In contrast to the American pop industry, where artists like Miley Cyrus have to be fully naked as in her video for "Wrecking Ball" to actually create controversy, K-Pop artists can display skinship for the same level of shock value. In 2013, some of the sexiest comeback videos ranged from a girl group who took to pole dancing to illustrate the raw energy of "First Love" to a male star who wanted to remind his fans that he is more than just a comedic addition to "SNL Korea".

Jay Park is so inviting in his video for

Jay Park is so inviting in his video for "Welcome".

In April 2013, Jay Park released a 19 plus video which coincided with his birthday for the song "Welcome". Shedding the comedic innocence of his "SNL Korea" characters, Jay Park firmly established that he wanted to maintain his status as a sex symbol. The video maintains the artistry of 1990s hip-hop, with the suggestive invitation that Jay Park is welcoming audiences to his bed.

2PM used

2PM used "A.D.T.O.Y" to show they were grown and sexy.

JYP Entertainment's 2PM made a strong comeback in May 2013 with "A.D.T.O.Y" from the appropriately named "Grown". Although, "Come Back When You Hear This Song" was the leading single from "Grown", audiences were drawn to the sensuality of the "A.D.T.O.Y" video. The transition towards a more mature portrayal of 2PM was a wise one, considering the fact that members Chansung and Taecyeon had been heavily engaged in promotions for television projects during the time of the album release.

Is After School pole Dancing or teaching pole fitness?

After School turned to pole dancing for their music video "First Love" and received accolades for their mastery of an art relegated to adult entertainers and fitness instructors. The girl group is notorious for fully committing to learning new styles of dance and musicality, as witnessed previously with their choreography and promotions for "Bang". "First Love" has a slow tempo, which definitely helps to set the right mood.

Seungri goes from maknae to panty dropper.

Seungri goes from maknae to panty dropper.

BigBang's Seungri released a shocking 19 plus teaser for "Let's Talk About Love" comeback, in August 2013. The teaser featured high art images and video clips that seemed much more consistent with a G-Dragon release. Netizens immediately reacted to the teaser, especially to a scene that literally features panty dropping. YG Entertainment quickly clarified that neither Seungri or any of its other artists were actually depicted in the racy video, just their likeness.

How hot will HyunA and Hyunseung's Trouble Maker comeback be? If the dance teaser for "Now" is any indication, audiences can expect Hyunseung to literally be more hands on than he was for 2012's "Trouble Maker" choreography. With the news that the duo will also be releasing a 19 plus album following the initial market release for their comeback, HyunA and Hyunseung are most certainly poised have the sexiest comeback of 2013.

Craziest K-pop Transformations: Male Edition

I came upon Taeyang's spread in "ELLE Korea" magazine and I was shocked to say the least. When did he get all G-Dragon and avant garde on us? And why weren't we warned before it happened? This is what Taeyang used to look like:

This is his new transformation as he's gearing back for his solo comeback. Can we get a "whoa" up in here? Taeyang's album drops on November 1.

Like Us on Facebook :

Let's tackle Taeyang's BFF and fellow member G-Dragon who debuted with the group looking wholesome and ghetto fabulous in this all white get-up rocking a handkerchief on his neck.

Here's a screenshot of one of his recent looks from a music video off of his solo album:

When Jay Park first debuted with JYPE, they had him tattoo-less, had him shave "2PM" in his head, and gave him clothes that looked like it was from a .99 cent store down the street.

He went solo and now he looks like this:

This may have more to do with weight loss, but you know I had to drag him on here. Look at Kangin when he was eating too much bbang (bread) and look at him now!

When 2AM's Changmin first debuted he was just a chubby kid who lost weight. He had no unique look or body.

But then he decided he wanted to become a machine of hotness. So he worked out and ate right and this was the result:

K-pop Idols Get Punk'd: Stars Being Funny with Each Other (Part One)

I'd rather watch hours of K-pop idols joking around and being silly with each other than music videos and variety programs. Is that strange? I know for a fact that none of you are shaking your heads and that you are all in agreement with me. Let's take a look at some of the funniest videos of idols being funny with each other!

Before Jay Park went on to become a hip-hop sexy solo star, he was just a goofy member in 2PM who painted things on his face and whispered "I love you" to his fellow members on "Wild Bunny." Watch Chansung, Jaebeom, and Taec be silly here:

Hollywood Actor Tom Hiddleston Goes for Funny in 'SNL Korea'

As previously reported, Hollywood actor Tom Hiddleston is in South Korea, after being toured by Tiffany in 'Seoul Vacation' variety show, the actor takes his comedy skills by having a guest appearance in tvN's 'SNL Korea' yesterday.

Like Us on Facebook :

Tom was in Korea to promote in the upcoming movie 'Thor: Dark World' where he plays the role of Loki.

In the beginning of his skit in the show, Tom started it up by dancing Crayon Pop's "Bar Bar Bar" in an apartment. He is making too much noise and this caused one of his neighbors to come and tell him to quiet down. On his 2nd skit, Tom pays Jay Park a visit and approach him to simmer down but unfortunately, it made Jay Park cry and his mother defends him by pinching Tom's nipples. On his last skit, Comedian Kim Min Kyo made an appearance as Thor and Tom also asked him to quiet down.

You can tell that Tom Hiddleston is a versatile actor and of course good looking too (^_^)

Jay Park and SISTAR's Soyou Perform Passionate Cover of 'Love's Maze'

Jay Park and SISTAR member Soyou mixed things up and wowed the audience and at-home viewers with their recent duet on KBS 2's Immortal Song 2.

On the October 19 episode, the pair performed a rearranged version of Choi Jin Hee's song "Love Maze" and definitely made it their own.

They split the song up and performed it as a couple in the midst of a breakup, with Jay adding in some passionate, high-speed rap verses and Soyou's powerful voice bringing the chorus home.

Like Us on Facebook :

The original singer of the song, Choi Jin Hee, was equally impressed as the fans and said, "It was like a different song with the rap in it. I was immersed in 'Love's Maze.'"

Even though the high-energy performance excited the audience, Jay Park and Soyou did not take home the trophy this week. That honor instead went to J2M.

G-Dragon And Mina Kwon Gearing For Pharrell Collab?

What sort of art can these three make together?

Can you imagine what will happen if some of the best music and artists in Korea worked with one of the biggest names in American hip-hop? It may be possible. A few days ahead of her art show in Los Angeles, Mina Kwon was tagged in a tweet by G-Dragon, pinning her with Pharrell. G-Dragon seemed excited about something, which Pharrell hinted is a collaboration. This is hot on the heels of a video Mina posted on her Instagram account, where she’s promoting her art show with a video of Pharrell hugging her, presumably because she designed the birthday cake for his 40th birthday.

The art work of G-Dragon’s talented sister, Mina, will be showcased at a street art exhibition at Ground Floor Cafe in Downtown LA from 8PM through 10PM on Thursday, September 12th. Ground Floor Cafe is located at 433 S. Spring Street, Los Angeles.

minapharrell

Mina’s done a lot of artwork that has depicted American and Korean artists, including Jay Park and Michael Jackson. She’s received a lot of attention, so these tweets are just making many people wonder if there’s some sort of collaboration going on.

Will the three be collaborating on an artistic venture? G-Dragon’s not just considered a singer but a true artist, so maybe the three are getting together for some sort of artistic extravaganza?

What do you think?

Both Clara C and Jay Park are seen posing together and separately for this photo shoot, and I must say they look great. Their outfits aren’t crazily put together and their make up isn’t out their either giving it a cool feel.

Clara C has been getting ready for her tour around North America while Jay Park is busy with his own promotions, so it’s nice to see them get together to show off a bit.

American artists like legendary rapper Missy Elliot, model/singer-songwriter Sky Ferreira, and a song produced by Diplo. His fellow bandmates T.O.P. and Taeyang will also be featured in the songs. K-pop Gone English Here at Seoulbeats, various forms of fan made media have been covered. K-pop mashups? Check. Fanfiction? Check. Smut? Check. The penchant of the Exo fandom for their inside jokes and edits? Check. So what is there left to talk about?

As a book lover and fanfiction writer myself, one of my favorite things to do is to look at the translations of K-pop songs that catch my ear. From the heartbreakingly beautiful “Amazing” by Infinite, Beast’s own masterpiece “Fiction” and the tear inducing “Don’t Want to be an Idol” by Vixx — those are just some of my personal favorite songs for their lyrics alone. But knowing the lyrical translation is not enough, sometimes. And since this is the K-pop fandom, you know there’s bound to be an English cover for your favorite songs.

In the sea of fan made material, K-pop English covers are somewhat overlooked in the countless fanart, fan edits and dance covers. But among the numerous English covers of our favorite K-pop songs, there are several that have stood out. There are three reasons why this is so: 1) the same emotions in the original are invoked, 2) the meaning of the song is not lost in the translation and, 3) the quality of the end product.

Seoulbeats has in the past featured PeuyeumUS, the sibling duo whose K-pop English Covers have won over many fans; but there are many memorable English language covers out there, and listed below are just a few. Some have views in the thousands, some have barely a thousand.

“The Boys” – Cover by tripstoomuch; Original by SNSD

Yes. “The Boys” from SNSD, infamously produced by Teddy Riley with an equally infamous English Version that the group performed on Letterman and Live! With Kelly. But let’s forget all about that and focus on this cover. The cover is an acoustic one and — I may be killed here — but may just be even better than the original. One of the negative points of the original was the clutter of the background, making the song sound unpolished and unfinished. But here, without the clutter of the background music in the original and with just a guitar to work with her voice, this cover nails it. Lyrics-wise, it adapts the released English version so nothing to comment on there. With only 770 views at posting, this deserves even more views.

“Ready to Get Hurt (On and On)” – Cover by Christopher Jordan; Original by VIXX

Back in January this year, VIXX made a comeback that captured attention and has been rising in popularity since then. The song that started their rise? “Ready to Get Hurt (On and On)” which saw the boys go into a darker theme of noble vampires; and the song reflected it, giving us a sense of grandiose without it being overbearing and while sticking to the synth pop that VIXX has been doing. So this cover came as a surprise. It almost sounds as the demo of the song itself. The lyrics are an almost word-for-word translation and minus Ravi’s English in the beginning, it sounds even more grand. True, the rap is missing here, but it covers all bases and is worth not just a listen, but a download.

“Peter Pan” – Cover by Silv3rT3ar; Original by Exo

“Peter Pan” is one of the many quality songs from Exo’s first album, XOXO. Without looking up the translations, one could already hear the various mentions to the fairy tale Peter Pan. The original sounded fine and made use of the background to give a feel of searching for someone you love before going to the chorus where they tone it down a slight notch before picking it up again — kind of like the stages of a story. This cover takes this to a new level. With just a guitar, the cover takes the original and gives us a song that is less upbeat and more heartfelt. It gives us the longing just hinted at in the lyrics of the original.

“Going Crazy” – Cover by MoA feat. emceeRANTSOM; Original by Secret’s Ji-eun feat. B.A.P’s Bang Yong-Guk

Back in 2011, Secret’s main vocalist, Ji-eun, had a solo début with “Going Crazy” which featured Bang Yong-guk who later debuted as the leader of B.A.P. This cover features no change in the background. It captures the same haunting beginning and pleading chorus. The rap sections were covered quite well as well, giving the same feeling as in the original. Amongst the covers listed, this is probably the most known and it is easy to see why. It sounds just as polished as the original and leaves the same impression as the original.

“Fiction” – Cover by girltarist; Original by Beast

In Beast’s discography, “Fiction” stands as their crown jewel. It propelled the group to new heights and it can be attributed to the overall production of the song as well as the lyrics. It told a story of a man who, after being left by his lover, sought to relive their love again and again by writing their story down — the only difference being a happy ending. This cover carries the same lyrics and gives the same sorrow and longing found in the original. It is emphasized throughout the cover and at the 3:29 mark, the emotional climax of the song kicks in. It is an almost word-per-word translation and that together with the emotional likeness is why this is one of the best covers of “Fiction.”

These are just some examples of K-pop English covers. How do you like them, readers? Do they also give you the same emotions as the original? Did it enhance your listening experience by being able to sing along with it in English? There are many other English covers lurking around so if you have one that is as quality as those above, go ahead and share!

Best Song Covers: K-pop Idols Singing English Songs Part II
Tiffany, taeyeon, ah yeon, ailee, sunye, hyorin, jay park Best Song Covers: K-pop Idols Singing English Songs Part II When I first heard that Girls' Generation Taeyeon, Tiffany and Ah Yeon were doing a cover and performance of "Lady Marmalade," I was frightened. Mainly because the song is extremely sexual, suggestive, and there are some high notes in the song. But fortunately, it was great and innocently sexy. Pussycatdolls's "Button" is one of my favorite songs and Taeyeon, Gain, and Sunye's rendition of it wasn't too bad, not bad at all...

park ji min, tiffany, snsd, taeyang, xiah junsu, boa Best Song Covers: K-pop Idols Singing English Songs Part I There's kind of an excitement amongst English speaking K-pop fans when their favorite idol releases a cover or performs an English song. It's this feeling of closeness we feel to them that they know the same songs we do and they can sing it like we do. Does that make sense or am I just alone on this? K-pop idols love American music like the rest of the world and absolutely love doing covers of their favorite pop singles...
